The BMDCA encourages regional breed organizations establishment and educates the public on the peculiarities of the breed. It is also instrumental in perfecting the breed by developing guidelines for breeders and holding health surveys that help to eliminate the health problems inherent in the breed.

The BMDCA is an officially recognized organization that was established in 1968 and has been promoting the breed ever since. Comprising only a few dozen members at the beginning, the organization did well by accomplishing the goals and the community of breed owners grew steadily.
