In the 19th century, a number of foreign breeds were introduced to Switzerland making it hard for the native breeds to keep the leading positions. Luckily enough, breed enthusiasts especially Albert Heim and Franz Schertenleib saved the breed from destruction and now it is loved all over the world.

Mountain Dog Bernese Art -
rescue, photo
Though the exact origin of the breed is unknown, it is believed that the breed is the ancestor of farm canines crossed with Roman fighters. They were a helping hand in delivering agriculture products by pulling heavy sleighs in countries with no appropriate roads.
