If you are considering buying a puppy, it is important that you know where to find a reputable breeder for Bernese Mountain dogs. Regrettably, not all breeders are well educated about the Bernese Mountain dog. It is of the utmost importance to find an individual that has been breeding, training and raising Bernese Mountain Dogs for several years. Besides being extremely knowledgeable about the breed in general, they should also be educated on the potential health problems in the breed and screen their breed dogs for genetic diseases. A quality breeder will always ask you questions about your home and your plans for the dog. This is a sign that they truly care about what happens to their Bernese Mountain puppies. You should also be aware that an American Kennel Club registration only guarantees that the dog is a purebred (if the owner is honest), it does not guarantee the quality of the puppy or the breeder.

It is important to buy puppies from health certified breeding stock. Since the Bernese Mountain dog suffers from hereditary diseases such as hip dysplasia, eye problems, and others, the parent dogs should be screened for these disorders. Bernese Mountain dogs should have the OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animal) and the CERF (Canine Eye Registration Foundation) certificates. Screening for hip dysplasia is started at the age of two years old and performed yearly. Breeders should also inform you on the basics of raising Bernese Mountain dogs.
